Web Standards

Today, as more and more Brothers and Chapters are on the Internet and developing web pages for the viewing pleasure of the net-surfing public, it is important that we preserve the proud heritage of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity and show the world that the men of ZBT are the best! Remember, as they say in advertising, "image is everything."

The following approved guidelines are to be used with respect to any page on the Internet which has any reference to Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity, on a national or local level. All web pages and related or hyper-linked pages should always be in the "best of taste" so as not to embarrass the Fraternity, any of its Chapters or individual Brothers. We all have a stake in upholding ZBT's image.

Guidelines

  1. There must be no representation of any alcoholic beverage(s), generic or brand, in connection with the Fraternity, directly or indirectly.
  2. There must be no representation that associates the Fraternity, a Chapter or a Brother with illegal drugs or similar substances.
  3. All content must respect the rights of others. Many parents and prospective Brothers surf the net. We don't want to offend any of them. For example, there should not be any content which denigrates women or is violent in nature.
  4. Sexual material should never appear on any pages.
  5. No foul language should be used in any context on any pages.
  6. The content of all pages should not denigrate other Greek organizations, universities or university personnel.
  7. There should not be representations, in any form, of esoteric ZBT material.
  8. ZBT's name and symbols (crest, pin, flag, etc.) are owned by ZBT and may not be altered in any way. Alteration of these items is a disservice to our Founders and ZBT history and tradition. You may obtain correct graphic art, .tif and .eps files from the National Office.
  9. Each Chapter must designate at least two persons who are able to make changes to the web site in the event that material must be changed or removed. The National Office must be provided with information on these individuals (names, contact information, etc.) and be promptly notified of any changes. It is suggested that one of these persons be appointed as the webmaster who will assume primary responsibility for the design and maintenance of the web site.
  10. Providing these guidelines are followed, Chapters may link to ZBT national's web page (http://www.zbt.org).
  11. Chapters should exercise caution if making a list of Brothers available on the Internet as this list may be used by various individuals or companies in marketing or other ventures. This could be an invasion of privacy.
  12. Remember that contributions to the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation, Inc. are tax-deductible as defined by its 501(c)(3) status. Contributions to individual Chapters are not deductible unless you have an IRS approved 501(c)(3) foundation. If you state that contributions to a non-approved group are deductible, you may be fined by the IRS.

Suggestions For Web Site Content

Things which you might want to include in your Chapter's web pages and links are:

  1. How to contact you via mail, phone and e-mail.
  2. A schedule of your Chapter's rush activities.
  3. The ZBT Credo.
  4. Brothers who have received various honors on campus as well as Brothers who have been admitted into ZBT's College of Honors.
  5. ZBT does not pledge or haze.
  6. A picture of your Chapter house (if it is in good condition).
  7. Your Chapter's history.
  8. Links to your school's web page, other ZBT Chapters and ZBT national.
  9. ZBT's national history.
  10. Information about ZBT's Centennial.
  11. How prospective rushees may obtain information about your Chapter.
  12. Schedule of alumni reunions.
  13. Photos of Brothers (that follow the guidelines).
  14. The ZBT Crest, badge (pin) and flag.
  15. Your academic achievements.
  16. The special relationship you have with your Brothers.
  17. Your Chapter composite. (Takes a long time to download.)
  18. Chapter announcements for your Brothers.

The net can be used as a tool to demonstrate what being a ZBT is all about. Emphasize the positive aspects of fraternity life on your pages. Think your pages through before they are published. Take the time to have someone look at them first and make suggestions for improving the content and aesthetics of your pages. Be sure your spelling and grammar are correct.

Presentation Issues

Color - Use color that is easy on the eye (e.g., white text on a light gray background is not a good idea). Stay away from busy background graphics as your links and text may be absorbed into the background and become unreadable. For easy reading, you will need adequate contrast (you can't use black text on a dark blue background).

Text - Use a font and point size that does not require a magnifying glass. You want your material to be easily read. Do not use too many different fonts on a page (a maximum of three is a good idea).

Photographs - Your composite can be a great tool for rushees learning the names of your Brothers. Remember that the aesthetic composition of your photos is also important. Do not use a large photo on your opening web page as many surfers will not have the patience to wait for it to download and will quickly "surf" to another site. A great looking Chapter house with all of the Brothers in front can make a great presentation.

Graphics - You can obtain graphic art of ZBT's Crest and pin from the national office. You should never take it upon yourself to alter ZBT's Crest, pin, flag, etc. Animated graphics can add interest but increase download time.

Sound/Video - Short sound bites (long ones take too long to download) can provide interest and variety. Be sure that your viewers have the correct plug-ins (such as RealAudio) to use your audio or video. Remember the guidelines above.
