Zeta Beta Tau - Chapters of Excellence: Bonding
In order to achieve the maximum number of points in this category the Chapter must organize and implement at least 8 brothers-only, non-alcoholic, events per academic year.
Program Ideas:
- Senior-Freshman/Junior-Sophomore dinner for brothers to spend more time with each other
- Chapter Retreat(s)
- Pass the Candle: This session provides an important opportunity for Brothers to share their personal feelings about issues that affect ZBT. The candle is passed from Brother to Brother as each Brother shares his personal feelings about the issue being discussed.
- Weekend road trips
- Fraternity Rituals
- Brothers-only ski or beach trip
- Fact hunt for the Chapter
- Brothers-only BBQ
- "I Expect" Activity: An exercise in determining all brothers' expectations of the chapter during the year/future.
- "Brother to Brother" Activity: Getting to know brothers better by asking a variety of questions.
- Trust-building activities
- Sumo wrestling: renting sumo suits or putting on several layers of clothing and wrestling on mattresses in the chapter house
- Big Brother/Little Brother events
- Ropes Course
- Trip to a professional sports game
- Visit another ZBT chapter
- Karaoke Nights
- Intra-Chapter athletic events/challenges
Best Practices for Success:
- Assess the interests of all brothers at the start of the academic year.
- Offer programs on a variety of days and in a variety of locations.
- Aim to include at least one Chapter retreat per semester or two per academic year.
- Plan far in advance so that brothers may adjust outside commitments accordingly.
- Look for inexpensive options...too many costly events will prohibit some brothers from attending.
- Address behavior that violates the idea of a "non-alcoholic" event.
- Don't stress if you don't get every brother to every event...focus on the brothers who do attend and be sure they have a good time.
- Let other people, especially potential members', know of the exciting events you have planned to entice them to seek membership.
- Involve brothers in the planning stages...have different groups of brothers be responsible for different events.
- See Brotherhood Program 2000 manual for ideas under each of the six areas of the Brotherhood Circle.
- Refer to ZBT's Guide to Planning a Calendar.
