In order to achieve the maximum number of points in this category your chapter must have a retention rate of at least 85%. The only reasons for leaving a chapter that don't affect your retention rate are: graduation, transferring to another school, and active service in the military.
There are no forms that the chapter needs to fill out for this category. The National Office staff calculates this at the completion of each academic year by looking at the number of members at the start of the year compared to those who left for the reasons described above. Any other loss in membership would lower the retention rate.
Best Practices to Excel
- Meet with the brothers, by class, at the start of each academic year to find out what type of programming and activities would keep them involved in the Chapter.
- If possible, scale dues so that they get lower each semester/quarter you are in the Chapter.
- Involve your upperclassmen in the planning of events (Ex. Each year the seniors plan the formal and juniors plan the Spring Break trip.).
- Reward brothers for outstanding involvement as a junior and/or senior.
- Remain in contact with brothers who study abroad so that they look forward to involvement with the Chapter when they return.
- Provide career counseling and alumni networking for your upperclassmen.
- Institute an alumni-senior big brother program. Alumni will assist graduating seniors with preparations for their resumes, job interviews and other work related items.
- Keep your upperclassmen updated with Chapter events, especially if they live out of the house.
- Conduct the Graduation Ritual properly. Conduct the Gold Book for this Ritual.
We will calculate your retention points based on our membership database at the conclusion of each academic year. Be sure that your records are updated with the National Office staff to ensure your maximum number of points.
